Professional Competency 10
Professional competency 10 has to do with co-operating with the family and education partners in the community. As teachers, this means that we must deal with the family situations of each of our students and work together, with members of the family, as a cooperative team to do what is best for each individual student.

My development
I believe that I have been very fortunate to have had plenty of opportunities to co-operate with families throughout my internships, specifically the final one. During my second and third placements, I communicated with the parents during the virtual parent-teacher conferences. I had been teaching the students more frequently than my CT and thus, was able to answer certain questions and concerns the parents had more than my CT. During my final internship, being placed in an indigenous community, I learned so much about the responsibility and importance of being open and showing respect and understand towards the families and their various situations. We continuously kept parents up to date on how their children were doing and warned them if we had any considers or worries. Due to these experiences, I believe that my level of mastery for this competency is “advanced” as I have much consideration for creating a relationship with parents as it only serves to benefit the students.

In this section of my CT’s nomination for me for the Phyllis Shapiro award, it demonstrates how I have developed this competency. During the virtual parent-teacher conferences, I was able to communicate with parents about the progress of their children and was very receptive to any questions and worries the parents had for us. I learned how important it is to inform parents of things that need to be addressed while also making sure to focus on the positives so that the parents understand the realities while knowing that they can entrust their child’s education with us.

During this workshop, we had the help of an ESL consultant. She explained to us how to successfully use observations and grades in the classroom to confidently evaluate students in the report cards. This was all about the success of students in a education world that is highly focused on who has the best grades. In cooperating with other educational partners in the school we can begin to better understand our students and build healthy and safe relationships with both the student and their family members.

During my final internship in an indigenous community, I learned how important it was to keep in constant contact with the parents to inform them of the progress of their children while also showing them how they were spending and enjoying their days. To do this, my CT has her own private Facebook group with all the parents, and we would post our daily activities so that parents could enjoy and see what their children were learning about. Parents would always text in the chat about how happy they were that we were posting and how they enjoyed seeing their children happy and having fun at school.

If you fail, never give up because F.A.I.L. means "First Attempt In Learning".
End is not the end, in fact E.N.D. means "Effort Never Dies".
If you get no as an answer, remember N.O. means "Next Opportunity".                                                                                             - A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
