Professional Competency 9

Professional competency 9 revolves around the cooperation with everyone outside of the classroom, meaning everyone in the school, not just the students. Schools need so many different people for it to function from the teachers to the administrative staff to the ministry educational teams. In order to achieve our goals in teaching, we must have a good relationship with our students’ other teachers and good rapport with the administrative staff and any other additional teams. It is imperative to figure out our position within the school setting so as to complete our work properly.

My development
I believe that I have achieved the ‘thorough’ level of mastery with regards to this professional competency. Despite COVID having shut down all extracurricular activities and interactions outside of the classroom during my second and third internship, my Cooperating Teacher was a PEI teacher therefore, I was able to attend quite a few meetings and worked closely with the other PEI teachers. This interaction allowed me to further develop this professional competency. I also had the privilege of helping the English teachers for secondary 1 to 3 develop the English Exam that takes place on December 14th. In doing this, I had the opportunity to voice my opinion on certain aspects of the exams and my CT trusted me with creating the rubrics for his PEI groups since it is separate from the regular stream rubrics. Finally, I also had many opportunities to develop this competency throughout my fourth placement as I helped plan and participated in many of the school activities that took place. Specifically, I helped spent Carnival week helping my CT and other teachers with the control of the groups and activities that the students participated in.

These pictures are screen shots from the letter of recommendation written by my CT for the Phyllis Shapiro award that I was nominated for. I believe that this demonstrates my development of PC 9 since my CT has also noticed that I have created a good rapport of both the staff and parents. I became friends with the staff, especially with those in the English department. Finally, during the parent teacher interviews, I discovered that same parents had already heard quite a lot from me and trusted my abilities to respond to their questions since their children had kindly spoken of me.

The pictures from the 6 meetings that I attended demonstrate my development of PC 9 because it shows my involvement in discussions with teachers from the PEI program as well as my involvement in helping two secondary 5 students with their Personal Projects. I also took diligent notes on how to complete the bookings for parent teacher night and shared them with those teachers that were unable to attend the training. I was able to situate my role in relation to that of the other staff members. I was there to provide my CT with help and support other teachers since they have far more experience. I believe that I truly established myself since teachers requested my help and genuinely wanted to hear my opinion on certain points.

During my final internship, there were multiple opportunities for me to participate in extracurricular activities, especially during the planning and occurrence of Carnival week. The school put together an entire week (4 days since the Friday was going to be a pedagogical day) of fun activities for all the students to enjoy. There were a lot of logistics that we needed to consider throughout the planning and those responsible were grateful for our help and involvement in the project. Once Carnival week started, I helped my CT and the other teachers manage the students at every location we went to throughout the days. This week, therefore, gave many plenty of chances to develop my relationship with everyone working in the school, not just the students and my CT.

If you fail, never give up because F.A.I.L. means "First Attempt In Learning".
End is not the end, in fact E.N.D. means "Effort Never Dies".
If you get no as an answer, remember N.O. means "Next Opportunity".                                                                                             - A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
