Professional Competency 4

Professional Competency 4 deals with the aspects of carrying out lessons in the classroom. It focuses specifically on teaching lessons that are appropriate for our students, the level that they are at and the competencies that they need to be developing. We must be prepared for problems in understanding and know how to remedy them. We must also create an environment in which we become the guide, giving our students the necessary resources and information so that they can, alone or preferably in cooperation with others, then carry out the tasks required of them.

My development
I have had many opportunities to work on this competency and I believe that I have reached the ‘advanced’ level of mastery. I am able to teach my lesson in such a way that students understand what has been asked of them and how to complete the work properly. I have the ability to run the class with efficiency while ensuring that my students have the opportunity to develop the required competencies. I react quickly when problems arise, and I find solutions so that the lesson runs smoothly throughout. Finally, I believe that I have achieved the advanced level seeing as both my supervisor and CT, from my second and third stage, nominated me for the Phyllis Shapiro Award for ‘Excellence in Teaching’. The fact that they honoured me with this nomination means that my teaching has gone above and beyond their expectations for a student teacher in her third field experience.

These pictures demonstrate a clear development of professional competency 4 since I taught my secondary 1 students the entire unit on E-waste. The posters from the pictures were the final project students completed after having read an article, watched a video and responded to questions about E-waste. Students were given plenty of time to understand the material being presented to them and demonstrated their understanding by creating these wonderful posters (in teams of 3-4) and presenting them to the class. The final two pictures are the rubrics for both the poster and presentation. I left room for comments which I filled out for every group so that they would understand what they did right and the reasons for which they lost points (if they lost any). Through every step, I was there to guide students and checked for understanding as we went along in order to make sure that there were no issues with the material.

These videos also help to demonstrate my development of the competency since it is the final E-waste project that my secondary 3 groups needed to create. The secondary 1 and 3 groups both used the same magazine, although the secondary 3 groups have level two instead of one like the secondary 1 students. I was given the opportunity to teach a higher level of E-waste once again using an article, video, questions and response journal. Once again, students were given plenty of time to develop their understanding of the topic and then create commercials (in teams of 3-4) outlining what E-waste is and one solution that people could use in order to reduce their electronic waste creation. Students were guided through every step and I constantly checked for understanding so that they could succeed in the final project.

I completed this activity during my final internship. Every year, there is a big celebration for the completion of 100 days of school. Since there were many closures due to covid, the school had yet to celebrate 100 days when I first started. This said, my grade 1 students have been practicing counting to 100 since the start of the year and so I decided to complete a fun and interactive math lesson with them. The activity consisted of them working in teams to place the corresponding number of stickers in the various shapes. I believe this is a prime example of my ability to successfully carry out lessons that are appropriate yet entertaining for all of my students.

If you fail, never give up because F.A.I.L. means "First Attempt In Learning".
End is not the end, in fact E.N.D. means "Effort Never Dies".
If you get no as an answer, remember N.O. means "Next Opportunity".                                                                                             - A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
