Professional Competency 12
Professional competency 12 deals directly with the use of Information Communication Technologies (ICT). In today’s technologically advanced society, teachers must develop the ability to recognize when it is appropriate to integrate ICT into the classroom. We must understand the possibilities and benefits of ICT while also keeping in mind it’s limitations. We must use ICT effectively in our professional life while also transmitting the ability to use these ICT to our students.
My development
I believe that I have achieved a ‘advanced’ level of mastery regarding this competency. Information Communication Technologies play such a huge role in our society and the lives of our students. As such, I believe that, although I still must continue learning and finding new ways to use technologies, I have significantly developed in this area. I have successfully incorporated many different ICT to give my students an even better understanding of the material and subject we were covering. I have learned to use ICT with my groups that were online and have even experimented with different ways to make the online learning more engaging and interesting for my students. I have also learned to use the technologies for different age groups and grade levels to successfully teach my students.

These pictures demonstrate my development of PC 8 throughout the third field placement. I was able to incorporate ICT into my lesson plan when teaching Dracula to my students because I knew how much they enjoyed it. The Poll Everywhere was a great way to evaluate what my students already knew about the topic. Furthermore, all of the Kahoots that I created were a nice way to wrap up the lesson in a fun way which students really enjoyed since the lesson were reading or information heavy. Incorporating the Kahoots also gave me the opportunity to check for understanding. Of course, I had a hard copy of the questions in case the smartboard or internet had not been working properly. Finally, I had told students during the previous class to bring a device with access to the school internet so as to make sure that most, if not all, students would be able to participate individually.

Since my CT also taught two groups of secondary 3 students, I had the opportunity to work on my ICT skills because of the online classes. The school worked with the TEAMS application, something I had never used. It became clear very quickly that students were not going to follow an online class for a full 75-minutes and as such, I researched how to create breakout rooms for this application so that they could work together just as they would in class. This also came in handy when one of our groups ended up in quarantine and had their final E-waste project to complete.

Throughout my final placement, I used various songs and videos to maintain student attention while providing them with short brain breaks and creating a fun and enjoyable environment. I used audio-visuals so that students could better understand and visualize what it was that I was explaining to them (a caterpillar becoming a butterfly or chicks being born). I also found informative songs that were relevant to the lesson and provided them with the opportunity take a quick brain break and have some fun. I have learned to use ICTs as an added method or strategy and not as a substitution for learning which is something I believe is very important to remember: technologies are not there to replace our teaching but to help us.
